K. M. McWhorter was raised in Mobile, Alabama. She graduated from the University of Alabama earning a B.S. in Biology and Math and began work in medical research at UAB. She now lives in Decatur, Alabama with her husband, Robert, and a series of haughty cats.
In 1970, McWhorter fell in love with the lettering arts and in 1996 became interested in adding color and dimension to her work. She then moved to exploring layers in her pieces using color, lettering and German Schlag leaf in various hues. Currently her profoundly personal abstract and realistic watercolors reflect her joy in the world of nature without words or letters as she loses herself in color.
The award winning work of K.M. McWhorter can be found in Huntsville, Alabama, at the Huntsville Art League and in Decatur at Kathleen’s Fine Art Gallery and frequently at the Carnegie Visual Art Center. McWhorter’s work has been published and juried into shows around the Southeast and is part of collections as far away as Taiwan. She has also been awarded Silver Signature Member status in the Watercolor Society of Alabama.
